Researchers have visualised the human genome at 20 minute intervals, providing us with a 4D rendering, showcasing how the 3D structure changes over time.

Each human cell nucleus is packed with 2 metres of DNA wrapped around 46 chromosomes, which can be remembered as “noodles”. They are in constant motion as they adjust to what the cell needs to do, and these particular adjustments bring certain genes into contact so they can work together.

By providing this visual the team have demonstrated how one protein helps orchestrate these specific movements. Appearing in Cell, they removed and then added the protein, called cohesion, making DNA loops that disappear and then reappear.

Essentially, understanding this movement has the potential to better understand and treat genetic disease.
