Genomics data compression company, PetaGene has been awarded “Best of Show” in the Storage Infrastructure & Hardware category at the 2018 Bio-IT World Conference and Expo.

And it’s not the first time — in 2016 they won at the premier event showcasing innovations in technologies that drive biomedical research, drug discovery and development.

The awards program identifies exceptional innovation in technologies used by life science professionals, and the winners are judged based on the products’ technical merit, functionality, innovation, and in-person presentations to the judges at the show.

This year, 46 new products were considered in six categories, and the judges viewed presentations on site from 18 finalists.

PetaGene won for the Cloud Edition (CE) of its PetaSuite genome data compression product. The Cloud Edition provides two significant innovations for users:

  • The ability for a user’s software tools and pipelines to seamlessly integrate with a wide variety of cloud storage platforms without modification. AWS, Azure, GCP, private cloud and hybrid cloud are all supported transparently.
  • Significantly improved, high-performance, scalable PetaSuite genomic compression technology. Lossless compression ratios of up to 10x for GATK BAM files are now possible. All other file types can also achieve considerable improvements to compression ratios.

The 2018 judging panel represented the great and the good of the life sciences, pharmaceutical, clinical, healthcare and IT development worlds.

“The judges were very impressed with an offering that lets users access data compression, objects in storage or an s3 bucket, all from the command line,” PetaSuite CE, Bio-IT World Editor, Allison Proffit, said.

“We are honoured to win this prestigious award for the second time. The fact that the judges acknowledged the importance of our seamless cloud integration, with its implications for scaling and collaboration, was particularly pleasing,” said Dan Greenfield, co-founder and CEO of PetaGene.

“We will continue to strive to create solutions which speed up cooperation and analysis for our research and diagnostic customers.”
