Sounds incredible doesn’t it? But amazingly the technology that Andrew Bastawrous describes in this TED talk from 2014 is currently in play, with several companies offering eye tests via smartphones. 

Thirty-nine million people in the world are blind, and the majority lost their sight due to curable and preventable diseases. But how do you test and treat people who live in remote areas, where expensive, bulky eye equipment is hard to come by? TED Fellow Andrew Bastawrous demos a smartphone app and cheap hardware that might help.”

We often forget just what powerful, useful tools our smartphones can be. Especially when many of us use that power to, hypothetically, spend an entire lunch break chasing augmented reality monsters through the streets of London (*cough*). This is an amazing reminder of how we can harness that technology to achieve something really important.
